I was approached in 2021 by a friend and former colleague who wanted to make a short film with two parallel stories of a teenage boy and girl growing up in New York. One was a black boy from a poor family in the Bronx (Tyrone), another a white girl from a wealthy family in Staten Island (Katie). The theme of the story being that the two youths were very poorly adjusted and resentful of both society and their families, despite completely different inputs. Wealth and affluence were ultimately unable to improve outcomes for Katie, who was even more miserable than Tyrone, despite all of her advantages. It was going to be a social commentary, focused on inequality, poverty, substance abuse, domestic violence, and philosophy.
It was obviously going to be very dark, and he wanted me to compose some music for it.
Unfortunately, the project proved to be too ambitious for him, and he's since abandoned it. However, I'd already written some of the music. The original brief was to give him a mash up of Dust Brothers (the Fight Club soundtrack) and early Moby. He wanted it to have acidic industrial tones reminiscent of Gotham City and Sin City, but with an undercurrent of minimalist neo-classical music in the style of Nils Frahm.
The result was a small collection of tracks that I am releasing as So Dark.
I was given permission to release this music as a standalone project. Who knows, maybe we'll see the film one day? If not, you at least know what it would have sounded like. I hope the record takes you to a dark, gritty, and brooding place...
Enjoy!
